2017/2018 Scholarship Application for Post-Secondary School Students (Open)

The Vancouver Korean-Canadian Scholarship Foundation (VKCSF) is a charitable organization dedicated to providing scholarships to qualified students with Korean heritage or to those pursuing academic fields related to Korea. VKCSF encourages students to contribute to the well-being and prosperity of the Korean-Canadian community and the wider Canadian society.

VKCSF is pleased to announce that applications for the 2017/2018 scholarship are now open.

VKCSF will award scholarships to students who demonstrate the following:

1. Excellence in academic or vocational training;
2. Active involvement in a community and/or other notable non-academic activities; and
3. Financial need*

Please note that the above criteria are weighted equally. *if there’s no financial need, criteria #1 and criteria #2 will be weighted at 50/50.

Who Can Apply?

►Any Korean-Canadian (including permanent residents) or Korean international student who is enrolled as a full-time student (September 2017/April 2018) at an accredited post-secondary educational institution in the Metro Vancouver area.

►Those who are from Metro Vancouver but study elsewhere and whose family resides in the Metro Vancouver area are also eligible with official supporting documentation.

►Students without any Korean heritage pursuing academic fields related to Korea are eligible to apply.

WHAT to submit?

The application package consists of the following:

  1. Personal Information Form
  2. One passport-size color photo:
    • If you are awarded a scholarship, this photograph will be used in our Awards Ceremony Program and posted on the VKCSF Website. Please ensure that the photograph is passport-styled, and of sufficient quality for printing. School portraits are acceptable.
  3. One essay (500- 600 words in length, double-spaced, font size 12) on a topic of your choice from below, demonstrating your involvement in the community and/or other non-academic activities:
    • Your contribution to the enrichment of Canadian society; :
    • How you responded to a significant cultural challenge that you’ve encountered and what you learned in the process
    • How do you define Korean-Canadian?
  4. Sealed official academic transcripts that encompass all post-secondary school years (up to the date of application).
    • First-year students: University and all high school year official transcripts.
    • Grade 12 students: All high school year official transcripts and the acceptance letter from the post-secondary institution.
  5. A letter outlining your current financial circumstances (optional, 100 – 250 words)
  6. A copy of parent(s)’ and the applicant’s Notice of Assessment for tax year 2014 and/or 2015, if financial need is being considered
  7. One reference letter to be provided from an academic reference

Application Deadline: Thursday, June 15th, 2017

*Please note that application packages stamped after June 15th, 2017 will NOTbe considered.

All potential candidates will be individually notified by July 24th, 2017. Upon the notification, the following items MUST be submitted to VKCSF by August 13th, 2017 for the official announcement in local Korean newspapers in late August:
  1. Remarks on receiving the scholarship (100 words or less)

  2. Thank you letter to the donor
*Note that if the above items are not received by the indicated date (August 13th, 2017), the potential candidate will be disqualified from further consideration..

2017 VKCSF Scholarship Award Ceremony

To receive the scholarship, you or your representative MUST attend the ceremony. The awards will be given in person only at the ceremony.

  • Date: Saturday, September 9th, 2017 at 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm (reception starts at 5:30pm)
  • Place: Hilton Vancouver Metrotown (6083 McKay Avenue Burnaby, BC V5H 2W7)
